Glee-For-All Friday: The 10 Most O-M-Glee Stories of the Week!

Friday, June 18th, 2010

Oh, hey gleeks, remember when the cast of Glee literally invaded New York City this week? We’re not complaining (nor could we forget) that they were spotted at Times Square, Central Park, Lincoln Center and 5th Avenue filming the season 2 finale. But we’re also still giggling with excitement about the episode that aired this week. Ya know, the major “Born This Way” one?

From our adorbs interview with Darren Criss to episode recaps, click on for all this week’s Glee goss that you might’ve missed!

1. Monday started off with the gleeks hanging out in Times Square. Wonder what Finchel was filming there…
2. Then, Lea and Cory took to Central park to film some more. And is it just us or does it totally look like they were filming a wedding scene?
3. And while hitting up the Big Apple, the gleeks stopped for lunch breaks and were surrounded by the paps. But isn’t it nice to know that Lea Michele and Naya Rivera eat from street vendors, just like us?
4. But enough about the plot! What we really noticed during #gleeinnyc week were the outfits Rachel Berry wore. Which one is your fave?
5. But let’s not forget that despite all the NYC hooplah, there was a new episode of Glee, ya know. Did you predict everything we did in the “Born This Way” episode?
6. And from the one-liners (thanks, Santana) to the songs (OMG, TLC!), the super-sized ep was one of our faves. Catch up with our episode recap!
7. And while you’re at it, make sure to re-listen to all the songs from the episode too. A million times over.
8. Oh, we almost forgot. Darren Criss performed on Ellen with the Warblers and, yeah we’re pretty much in love.
9. And then we interviewed Darren at his album signing and he really was kissing and telling! Does he think Lea’s a better kisser than Chris Colfer?!
10. Next week’s episode of Glee is a Fleetwood Mac tribute, so you’re def going to want to learn the songs right about now so you can sing along. Good thing we’ve got all of them right here!

What was your fave Glee moment of the week? Highlight from the “Born This Way” episode? Tell us in the comments!

Man clichés.

Dial Torque WrenchWomen are frilly.

They don’t know one end of a DeWalt power drill from the other; they are too emotional to run a company or make critical business decisions. Girls don’t know shit about cars, either. They’d rather be gazing at paint chips and shopping for place settings.

Mmm hmmm.

If you thought for a nanosecond I was serious, you’d gouge me in the eye with a screwdriver, right? As well you should. This is why I must once again stop the runway show to vent a peeve with editors who insist on laboring similar sexist stereotypes about men. Take a look at this piece in the WSJ (subscription may be required), which trots out such tripe as “In the average man’s mind, shopping for clothes falls somewhere between taking out the garbage and going to the dentist—a necessary evil that subtracts from time that could be spent watching sports, drinking beer and taking naps.”

Sameer Reddy writes about some great online boutiques offering the hapless male essential “style advice.” Mentioned are Oki-Ni, Mr Porter and of course, Gilt Man, where every man who wants to buy an outdated sweater in May or another sad, plaid shirt may join and add more out-of-season inventory to his closet. The gist of the piece is that these sites “provide shopping-skittish guys with a reason to never leave the house again,” and “editorial content that shepherds visitors through the corridors of male personal style.”

Honey? I’m lost over here in shirting. Everything looks pastel. What’s my neck size? What goes with grey? The corridors of personal style are so daunting.

Readers of Stylerant know what I think of this cliché, the one that says men are oafish, beer-swilling doofuses, too busy looking for brass nipples in the plumbing aisle at Home Depot or watching football to care about how they look. If they do, they must hide this unmanly trait and shop at home in their beaters with ESPN turned up really loud.

Maybe that’s true. It would account for the uncommon number of square-toed shoes I still see on the street. So, query. How many of these vessels of virility will spend 20 seconds on the “Gilt Manual,” or reading aloud from the Mr Porter Style Directory (Your Most Pressing Questions Answered)? “There isn’t much that works as well in Hoxton as it does in Herefordshire, but the key is to find clothes you like that are irreproachable in both environments.”

Certainly the dude with Doritos dust and lawncare grit under his nails will be dividing his attention between Preds playoff games and the Anders Sølvsten Thomsen slideshow.

The fact is, some men care about style, and some don’t. Those who don’t, won’t give two air filters for a guide explaining the difference between brogues and bluchers. Those who do, don’t need it. Or desiring help or friendly input, they head to a local shop and develop a relationship with a lady or gentleman who looks well put-together – whatever that means – and get some live looks.

Meanwhile, editors: if you want to tell me about cool places to get cool clothes, please do that. But cut the cliché crap. It’s as bad as the time a new acquaintance said to me at dinner, “I just figured you were, you know, gay, because of your sense of style.”

Pass me my torque wrench, and a shoehorn, for I feel like changing the oil. In my espadrilles.
